Self-consumption storage: efficient and sustainable energy
Self-consumption storage solutions are revolutionizing the way we consume energy in Spain. Thanks to this technology, more and more solar installations can store the energy generated for later use, optimizing self-consumption and increasing energy independence. Below, we explain the key data and their impact on the market.

1. What is self-consumption storage?

The rise of self-consumption storage is reaching Spain. In 2022, 1,382.84 MWh of solar photovoltaic energy generated was stored for self-consumption.

Of this, 692.44 MWh correspond to grid-connected installations and 690.39 MWh to off-grid self-consumption installations.

2. Data and figures on storage in Spain

The study adds that this year’s capacity has fluctuated around 260 MW, taking into account that the number of hours a battery can operate is often variable and is estimated to be between 2 and 4 hours for grid-connected installations.
UNEF estimates that currently, 10% of self-consumption installations have storage systems behind the meter, a figure that rises to 66% in the case of isolated installations.

3. Impact and future of self-consumption storage

The rise of energy storage systems is great news for the BIPV market, considering the versatility of this technology to produce energy from any part of a building and use storage to cover 100% of energy demand.

What is behind-the-meter storage?

It is a system that allows the energy generated to be stored for later use at the same point of consumption, improving energy efficiency.

What percentage of facilities have storage?

Currently, 10% of grid-connected facilities and 66% of isolated facilities have storage systems.

What benefits does self-consumption storage provide?

It allows for increased energy independence, reduced electricity costs, and optimized use of generated solar energy.
